My wedding anniversary was a milestone, but the most unexpected and cherished gift arrived from afar just after a year. It wasn’t jewelry or fancy gadgets; it was a piece of art, a testament to friendship and shared admiration.
The artist, “Htee Saing” or we friendly called “Sayar Htee”, is not just a friend, but a respected mentor and a true inspiration. I met him through my sister, who, under his guidance, blossomed as a photographer. Sayar Htee, a master of his craft, excels in capturing the essence of his subjects, their moods, and the very soul within their eyes.
Beyond photography, Sayar Htee is a prolific painter, experimenting with various mediums – watercolor, acrylics, pen and ink – all with remarkable skill. His deep admiration for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, whom he affectionately calls “Aunty” is evident in his numerous portraits. In fact, he once created a gallery showcasing 76 of her portraits to celebrate her 76th birthday, a testament to his dedication and artistic vision. Since then, it has been a tradition for her upcoming birthdays.
Knowing my admiration for Amay Suu, Sayar Htee graciously offered to gift me a piece of his art for my wedding. A year later, on our first anniversary, a package arrived, bearing two exquisite paintings.
The first, a watercolor portrait, depicts Amay Suu in a flowing blue dress adorned with the iconic peacock pattern, a symbol of hope and resilience.
The second, a pen and ink drawing, captures a close-up of her face, her eyes filled with a profound hope, a hint of concern, and an unwavering determination.
These paintings are more than just art; they are a reflection of Sayar Htee’s deep respect for Aunty Suu and a cherished symbol of our friendship. Amay Suu, to us, represents more than just a political leader; she embodies kindness, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to justice and democracy.
As I gaze upon these masterpieces, I am filled with gratitude for Sayar Htee’s generosity and the enduring spirit of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. These paintings will forever hold a special place in our home, a constant reminder of the power of art, friendship, and the unwavering human spirit.
